Google is making a major change that will remove ads from the right side of its search results page, placing them only at the top or bottom of the page. At the same time, the company says it may show three or four more ads above search results for what it considers “highly commercial queries.”
All of this represents the conclusions of an experiment that began in 2010, and has been refined over the years. Search Engine Land readers—particularly some outside the US—told us late last year that they were seeing top ads more often.
Why is Google stopping showing right-side ads?
A Google spokesperson confirmed to Search Engine Land that the change is happening across all searches in all languages worldwide. Ads will no longer appear on the right side of the search results screen, with the following two exceptions:
- Product listing ads (PLAs), which appear above or to the right of search results.
- Advertise in knowledge panels.
The addition of a fourth ad that can show above search results will only show for highly commercial queries, according to Google’s official statement on the change:
“We’ve been testing this layout for a while, so some people may see it on a very small number of commercial queries. We’ll continue to refine it, but this is designed for highly commercial queries, where the layout can deliver more relevant results for searchers and better performance for advertisers.”
To clarify, the removal of right-side ads affects all desktop searches worldwide; the addition of a fourth ad above search results will happen for “highly commercial queries.” This would involve searches like “hotels in New York City” or “car insurance” and the like.

Removing all right-side ads clearly makes desktop and mobile search results more similar. On mobile, however, Google typically shows two or three ads at the top of search results.
A few notes about Google’s ad position changes
Note 1: Search Engine Land predicted this change via email from a Google advertiser who wished to remain anonymous, as well as the folks at The Media Image, who wrote about the change yesterday.
Note 2 : Google initially told Search Engine Land that there were two exceptions to the right-side changes: PLAs and Knowledge Panels. A spokesperson tells us that’s not the case, and that PLAs will be the only ads that will continue to show on the right side of the desktop search results page. Our article above has been edited accordingly.
Note 3 : After an additional email exchange, Google now says that their original statement was correct – that is, there may be two exceptions to the removal of ads on the right side of desktop search results: PLA frames and ads in Knowledge Panels. Our article has been reverted to its original version.
