Read receipts are a feature that allows you to confirm if a recipient has opened your email. While Outlook doesn’t automatically request read receipts, you can easily enable this feature for specific messages.
Method 1: Requesting Read Receipts for Individual Emails
- Compose a New Email: Open Outlook and start drafting a new message.
- Options Tab: Click on the “Options” tab in the message window.
- Request Delivery Confirmation: Check the box labeled “Request delivery confirmation.” This will confirm if the email was delivered to the recipient’s inbox.
- Request Read Receipt: If available, check the box labeled “Request read receipt.” This will confirm if the recipient has opened the email.

Method 2: Enabling Read Receipts for All Outgoing Messages
Outlook Options:
- Go to “File” > “Options” in the Outlook menu.
- Mail Tab: Select the “Mail” tab.
- Tracking Section: Scroll down to the “Tracking” section.
- Delivery Confirmation: Check the box labeled “Confirm delivery of messages.”
- Read Receipt: If available, check the box labeled “Request read receipt for all messages.”
- OK: Click on the “OK” button to save your changes.
Note:
- Recipient’s Settings: For read Phone Number Etiquette and Best Practices receipts to work, the recipient must have Outlook configured to allow read receipts. If they have disabled this feature, you won’t receive a confirmation.
